At the advice of a TEACCH consultant, I "scheduled" time for Henry to ride his bike on the little chalkboard I use for drawing picture schedules. (1 was a train, 2 was a bike, 3 was a question mark for free choice.) I left the room, and a few minutes later Henry told me he crossed off all the numbers. I had a good idea what he meant, but I walked back into the playroom just to be sure. Sure enough, the chalkboard had been completely erased. What did Henry say?
"Try again, Mom."
